Dr. Doug Brothwell DMD, BEd, MSc, DDPH Professor (On Leave)

Biography

Dr. Doug Brothwell is a Professor in the College of Dentistry and served a a five-year term as dean that conculded in 2022.

Dr. Brothwell came to the University of Saskatchewan after 20 years at the University of Manitoba, including 10-years as Associate Dean (Academic) and 10 years as the founder and director of the UM Centre for Community Oral Health, Canada’s largest public dental health entity serving disadvantaged Canadians. He served more than two years as president of the Canadian Association of Public Health Dentistry, and more than 20 years as a member and chair of the Canadian Dental Association's consumer products Seal of Recognition program.

He has DMD and BEd degrees from the University of Saskatchewan, MSc and DDPH degrees from the University of Toronto, and a Certificate in Quality Management from the University of Manitoba. Dr. Brothwell’s teaching responsibilities and interests include epidemiology, biostatistics, public health, mental health, smoking cessation, and evidence-based decision making.

Research Interests

Dr. Brothwell is currently PI for the “Aptitude testing related to admission to Canadian dental schools - Manual Dexterity” research project, which is investigating new and innovative ways to identify candidates with good manual dexterity for admission to dental schools. This research is funded by a grant from the Canadian Dental Association Committee on the Identification of Future Dentists.

Other current research interest and activites include the following:

  • Using mouthguards to improve peak athletic performance and endurance
  • Using mouthguards to prevent and monitor concussions
  • Dental emergencies for Northern medical practitioners
