BIO

Dr. Isaac J. de Souza Araújo is Assistant Professor of Dental Materials and Operative Dentistry. He holds a DDS degree from Rio Grande do Norte State University in Brazil (2013), with Master’s (2016) and PhD (2021) in Dental Materials from the State University of Campinas also in Brazil. His research training includes doing part of his PhD project at the University of Michigan (USA) developing scaffolds for craniofacial regeneration. Dr. de Souza did his postdoctoral fellowship training at the University of Tennessee Health Sciences Center (USA) focusing on scaffolds for dental pulp revascularization and periodontal regeneration. He has published several papers in renowned peer-reviewed journals and is the 2023 recipient of the Marshall Postdoctoral Award from the prestigious Academy of Dental Materials. Over the years, Dr. de Souza has established important collaborations with researchers from different countries in the fields of dental materials, craniofacial regeneration, and cell biology that reflected in his broad number of publications.

Dr. de Souza’s major areas of interest include studying 3D printed and Bioprinted scaffolds for Craniofacial Regeneration. His research focuses on the biomechanical and molecular mechanisms of cell response to the scaffolds’ environment. He is exploring the characterization of synthetic and naturally-based materials with potential applications for periodontal and dental pulp regeneration, and dental stem cells commitment and differentiation. He also focuses on the translational aspects of the strategies of craniofacial regeneration, including the use of anatomically relevant and in vivo models for reliable predictability of materials’ performance.
