Lanigan receives national recognition for contributions to oral surgery practice

Dr. Dennis Lanigan (DMD 1972) was honoured by Canadian Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons during its annual meeting.

The contributions of Dr. Dennis Lanigan to oral health care and research have been honoured by Canadian Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (CAOMS).

Dr. Lanigan, a 1972 Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) graduate of the University of Saskatchewan College of Dentistry, received the Founders’ Lecture Award presented during the organization’s 2022 annual meeting.

The award recognizes CAOMS members who have made significant contributions to the specialty of oral and maxillofacial surgery and/or the association through clinical, academic, research, public service or association-related activities.

“While teaching at the College of Dentistry he entertained a meeting with a young dental student asking about a career in surgery. He said, 'be patient, calm, hardworking and you will find your path,' ” said Dr. Kabir Virdi (DMD 2003) who, along with Dr. Rob Wagner (DMD 1996), introduced Lanigan at the CAOMS event held in Reykjavik, Iceland.

“He has been called many things: pioneer, mentor, professor, colleague to name a few. I am privileged that I can call him a friend. I am very lucky to have been able to work alongside him and learn from him.”

Dr. Lanigan received the award in recognition for his service to the profession, dedication to education and contributions to landmark publications during his 40-year career.

Though his Saskatoon practice, Dr. Lanigan made significant contributions to oral health care in Saskatchewan. He was instrumental in creating the required changes that allowed oral surgeons to operate in hospitals and receive admitting privileges. His contributions to research in orthognathic surgery complications provided valuable knowledge for the profession.

He is the true definition of a gentleman surgeon,” Dr. Virdi said. “While we walk this surgical path, we meet people along our way that walk beside us. If we are lucky, we walk amongst the wise. I know that everyone who has been able to walk beside Dr. Dennis Lanigan feels extremely fortunate. We have all benefited in some way from his wisdom and dedication to the profession.”

The College of Dentistry congratulates Dr. Dennis Lanigan on this well-deserved recognition and is proud to call him a member of our distinguished group of alumni.
