This comprehensive program offers a full-time, 12-week research experience during the summer break, providing students with an invaluable opportunity to gain hands-on research experience during their Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) program.

Participating in the Summer Research Program is more than just an academic endeavor; it's a strategic move to enhance one's CV, especially for those aiming for competitive graduate programs. "Research experience is highly regarded in many academic and professional settings, and this program provides a structured platform for students to develop and showcase their skills," says Dr. Eduardo Moffa, the programs organizer.

Upon completion of the program, students will be awarded a Certificate of Completion. Furthermore, they will have the chance to present their research findings at the College of Dentistry’s fall orientation, thereby augmenting their academic and professional profiles.

A key component of the program is the weekly research seminars where faculty members present the latest innovations in various areas of the dental field. These seminars are designed to provide students with valuable insights into the latest advancements and emerging trends in dentistry. Engaging with these seminars not only enhances their understanding of current research but also inspires and informs their own projects, fostering a deeper connection to the field and preparing them for future academic and professional pursuits.

As part of the program, the Dean's office has allocated 10 awards, each totaling $3,000. These awards will be disbursed at the end of the summer experience, recognizing the hard work and dedication of the participating students.

In addition to the Summer Research Program, the College of Dentistry is delighted to welcome six international students who have received Mitacs scholarships. These students will spend 12 weeks at the college conducting research and participating in the Summer Research Program activities. "This initiative aims to bridge the gap between our DMD students and their international peers, fostering meaningful connections and cultural exchange." States Dr. Moffa.

Isabela Dambiski, one of the visiting international students from The Federal University of Paraná in Brazil, is thrilled about this opportunity. In her final semester of her dentistry program, Dambiski has always aspired to gain international experience and acquire knowledge from various parts of the world. Her research will focus on water quality under the supervision of Dr. Michelle Siqueira.

Gabriela Dalbem, also from Brazil and in her 5th year, shares a similar desire for international experience. Her research will focus on oral cancer screening in rural Saskatchewan, a critical area of study. She states that she has always had an interest in public health. Her research is under the supervision of Dr. Amrinderbir Singh.

The Dean's office views this initiative as a significant opportunity to build a robust student network, enhancing the educational experience and broadening the perspectives of all participants. Increased interaction and collaboration can lead to invaluable benefits, including the sharing of diverse ideas, practices, and innovations in the field of dentistry.

The Summer Research Program is not just an educational venture; it’s a transformative experience that prepares students for future success in the dynamic field of dentistry. Through hands-on research, insightful seminars, and international collaboration, participants will leave the program with enhanced skills, broadened horizons, and a strong foundation for their professional careers.
