Connections in Motion: A Resounding Success Ignites Potential for an Annual Tradition
Connections in Motion drew over 50 students and 20 dental offices from across the province.
By Duane KripIn a resounding success, the University of Saskatchewan's College of Dentistry hosted its groundbreaking event, "Connections in Motion – A Speed Networking Experience," on February 2, 2024. The event, aimed at fostering connections between graduating students from the Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD), Dental Assistant (DA) and Dental Therapy (DT) programs and dental practices, exceeded expectations with over 50 students and 20 dental offices from across the province in attendance.
Representing all corners of Saskatchewan, from Swift Current in the south to Prince Albert in the north, Yorkton in the east to Lloydminster in the west, and a strong contingent from Saskatoon, the event attracted a diverse range of dental practices.
The participating dental offices had varied objectives, reflecting the diverse needs of the dental community. Some were eager to hire Dental Assistants to enhance their current teams, while others envisioned growth opportunities for their practices and sought DMD and DA graduates to facilitate that expansion. Additionally, some of the practices were at different stages in their business cycles, actively engaging in succession planning.
In his opening remarks, Dr. Walter Siqueira, the Dean of the College of Dentistry, emphasized that "Connections in Motion is more than just an event; it is a bridge between the academic world and the professional dental community." Dr. Siqueira highlighted the significance of witnessing the talent nurtured by the college and the opportunity for graduates to embark on their professional journeys.
The event's format, resembling speed dating, provided a unique platform for one-on-one interactions between students and dental professionals. Dr. Siqueira expressed his satisfaction with the inaugural event, declaring it a "tremendous success." Based on this success, he sees the potential for "Connections in Motion" to become an annual tradition within the College of Dentistry.
The success of the event was made possible through the generous sponsorship of Audi Saskatoon and the College of Dental Surgeons of Saskatchewan. The venue, Audi Saskatoon's main showroom at 803 Melville Street, was transformed into a dynamic space for networking and collaboration, facilitating meaningful connections within the dental community.
As "Connections in Motion" continues to bridge the gap between aspiring dental professionals and potential employers, it not only supports the professional growth of future dental professionals but also strengthens the connections within the dental community. Dr. Siqueira encouraged his colleagues, stating, "Your insights, experiences, and guidance can play a crucial role in shaping the future of these budding dental professionals. Today is not just about job placements; it's about building connections that transcend the workplace and contribute to the growth of our dental community as a whole."
With the overwhelming success of the inaugural event, "Connections in Motion" is poised to become a staple in the College of Dentistry's calendar, providing a consistent platform for networking, collaboration, and the growth of the dental community in Saskatchewan.
