Following the launch of the new Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene program, another first has been achieved—USask now has its first student representative in the Canadian Dental Hygienists Association (CDHA) Student Leadership Program.

Sophia Chiasson has been named the junior student leader for CDHA, marking a significant achievement for both her and the newly established dental hygiene program. The CDHA Student Leadership Program appoints student representatives from recognized dental hygiene programs across Canada to serve as liaisons, facilitating communication between faculty, students, and the association.

Sarah Dokken, Marketing Manager at CDHA, expressed confidence in Chiasson's ability to thrive in this role. “Overall, Sophia’s experiences and aspirations paint a picture of a dedicated, proactive, and community-oriented individual with a strong focus on personal and professional growth,” said Dokken. “Her prior work experience allowed her to develop essential advocacy, communication, teamwork, and event management skills, all of which are crucial for thriving in the CDHA Student Leadership Program.”

Carla Ofstie, Academic Director for the dental hygiene program shared her enthusiasm saying, “This is such an exciting opportunity for not only Sophie and the College of Dentistry, but also for the province of Saskatchewan. To have a Student Leader representing Saskatchewan is a huge honour and privilege.”

For Chiasson, this appointment is an honour, particularly given the caliber of her peers in the USask program. “I am very excited to see not only the CDHA Student Leadership Program develop at the University of Saskatchewan but also the dental hygiene program itself,” she said.

Since starting at USask, Chiasson's professional aspirations have expanded beyond clinical dental hygiene. She views this leadership role as a pivotal step toward her long-term career goals. “I am excited to expand my social circle beyond Saskatoon and my hometown, as I work and collaborate with the other student representatives across the country. Additionally, because my past work experience has been outside of the dental field, I am eager to broaden my professional skill set,” she explained.

The CDHA Student Leadership Program provides invaluable opportunities for students to grow as leaders and advocates for the dental hygiene profession, both nationally and within their communities. Student leaders play a vital role in fostering communication between CDHA, faculty, and students, while also learning the power of collaboration and advocacy. The program also gives student representatives a platform to voice their opinions and contribute to the association’s development.

As Chiasson embarks on this leadership journey, she hopes to further develop her professional skills, including public speaking, creativity, and leadership. “This opportunity will allow me to strengthen the advocacy values I already possess and prepare me for future professional endeavors,” she said.

Chiasson’s appointment, reinforces the College of Dentistry commitment to fostering leadership and innovation within the dental hygiene field. Her selection serves as an inspiration to future students and highlights the growing impact of USask’s newly minted dental hygiene program both at home and on the national stage.
