Dr. Juliana Faquim, PhD, DDS, MSC

Dr. Juliana Faquim is a Professor in the College of Dentistry at the University of Saskatchewan. Known for her collaborative and passionate approach, Dr. Faquim is a dedicated scientist and lifelong learner. Throughout her career as a Dentistry Professor, particularly within the Dental Hygiene Program, she has excelled in the four major pillars of academia: Teaching, Research, Service, and Community Outreach.

Dr. Faquim has published numerous papers in international journals, contributed to book chapters, and authored seven books. She has extensive experience as a professor in the Dental Hygiene Program at the Federal University of Uberlândia in Brazil. She spans over 20 years of experience overseeing courses related to public health, periodontics, and oral radiology. Her educational philosophy promotes an integrated approach to teaching, research, and outreach, aiming to generate and disseminate knowledge in science, technology, and innovation. She encourages her students to develop critical thinking skills and to embrace principles such as ethics, democracy, inclusion, diversity, equity, sustainability, and social transformation.

In the field of research, Dr. Faquim has led numerous projects, authored significant publications, and secured substantial external funding as a principal investigator. Her commitment to promoting oral health is demonstrated in her efforts to advocate for evidence-based dentistry, aiming to enhance both the quality and accessibility of oral healthcare for all. Her research interests and expertise extend to public health, primary health care, interprofessional collaboration, oral health surveillance, health policy and management, care management, health equity, social inclusion, and qualitative research.

Dr. Faquim holds a DDS (1999), a Master’s Degree in Dentistry (2003), and a PhD in Public Health from the Public Health School of the University of São Paulo (2016). She is also a specialist in Periodontics and Oral Radiology, with additional specializations in Policy, Planning, Management, and Evaluation in Oral Health (2019), and in Teaching in Higher Education (2005).

Beyond her academic achievements, Dr. Faquim is known for her enthusiasm for life. She is the proud mother of Bianca and Gustavo, and she cherishes time spent with her family and friends. She loves working out, running, and cycling. She is always seeking personal growth and improvement. Dr. Faquim was proud to be a master swimming athlete and to complete two Olympic Triathlons, swimming 1500 m, cycling 40 km, and running 10 km.

Dr. Faquim is a firm believer in Education as a powerful tool for social change making the world a better place for all. Her favorite quote by Paulo Freire resonates deeply with her philosophy:
