From Jamaica to Canada: A Journey of Growth

Michelle Plummer hails from St. Elizabeth, Jamaica, West Indies. In pursuit of greater opportunities and personal growth, she moved to Canada in February 2015 with her husband, Andrew, and their son, Michael. Her move was fueled by a desire to advance her education and career while embracing the diversity and success that Canada offers.

Michelle’s dedication to learning is evident in her extensive academic background. She is currently pursuing a Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology at Yorkville University. Her educational journey includes an MBA in Finance and a Bachelor of Business Administration from Monroe University in New York, where she consistently made the President’s and Dean’s Lists. She has also earned diplomas and certifications in business administration, ministerial studies, and investment funds, demonstrating her commitment to continuous growth and development.

Before joining the College of Dentistry, Michelle built a successful career in finance and customer service. She worked as a Senior Personal Banker and Financial Advisor at Scotiabank Jamaica Limited for over 17 years, where she earned multiple awards for outstanding performance in sales. After moving to Canada, she continued excelling in the financial sector, working as a Financial Services Representative at CIBC.

A Pillar of Support at the College of Dentistry

Michelle joined the College of Dentistry in September 2019 as a Finance Assistant and in 2024 transitioned into her current role as Student Affairs Coordinator. In this role, she provides crucial administrative support to the Dean, manages interactions with senior university administrators and external stakeholders, and organizes key events. Her ability to create a supportive and efficient environment makes a significant impact on the College’s operations and student experience.

Michelle holds the distinction of being the first Black staff member hired by the College of Dentistry, a testament to the College’s commitment to diversity and inclusion. Her presence and contributions have helped pave the way for a more inclusive academic and professional environment.

For Michelle, the most satisfying part of her job is knowing that she positively influences students' lives. Whether by helping them access resources, guiding them through crises, or supporting their academic and personal development, she finds fulfillment in seeing students succeed and thrive.

Proudest Moments and Contributions

Among her many accomplishments, one of Michelle’s proudest moments at the College of Dentistry was coordinating and executing the prestigious White Coat Ceremony in January 2025. Taking full responsibility for its logistics and overall execution, she also had the unique honor of emceeing the event, a role traditionally reserved for senior faculty members or the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs. Her ability to lead such a significant event showcased her dedication and leadership.

Michelle is passionate about mental health and wellness and is actively working toward a future in counseling psychology. She envisions using her education and experience to create inclusive and supportive spaces for individuals and communities, particularly in academic and professional settings.
Outside of her professional life, Michelle is deeply committed to community service. She has volunteered with the Saskatchewan Intercultural Association, assisting new immigrants in their transition to life in Saskatoon. Additionally, she is a Notary Public of Saskatchewan, further extending her ability to serve her community.

Her love for travel has taken her across various countries, including England, Wales, France, the Dominican Republic, and Mexico. She has also embarked on multiple cross-country road trips throughout the United States and Canada, exploring diverse cultures and landscapes. When she’s not traveling, she enjoys camping, spending time outdoors, and boating, embracing the tranquility of nature.

Words to Live By

Michelle lives by the belief that "the sky is the limit and with God, all things are possible." She finds inspiration in the words of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow: "The heights of great men reached and kept were not attained by sudden flight, but they while their companions slept were toiling upward in the night."
Her journey exemplifies perseverance, excellence, and the power of lifelong learning. As we celebrate Black History Month, we honor Michelle Plummer’s contributions, not only to the College of Dentistry but to the broader community. Her dedication to education, service, and personal growth continues to inspire those around her.
