The College of Dentistry has launched a transformative new initiative to expand access to essential oral health services for community members who may face barriers to care. The USask Dental Access and Training Expansion (USASK-DATE) initiative provides fully funded dental services at the USask Saskatoon Dental Clinic for individuals who are uninsured or who may experience delays or limitations accessing the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP).

The initiative affirms the college’s commitment to equitable, community-centered dental care throughout the province.

“Through this initiative, we hope to address the critical shortage of accessible and affordable dental care in Saskatoon and surrounding areas,” said Dr. Walter Siqueira, dean of the College of Dentistry. “This program enables us to provide care for those who need it most, while also expanding clinical training opportunities for our dental students.”

Supported by federal resources administered through Health Canada, USASK-DATE focuses on serving underserved populations, including newcomers, individuals experiencing housing insecurity, and others who encounter financial or systemic barriers to dental care. By eliminating out-of-pocket costs, including CDCP co-payments and parking fees, the initiative aims to significantly improve oral health outcomes and overall well-being for community members with the greatest need.

Dr. Siqueira emphasized that the program reflects the college’s broader investments in clinical education and infrastructure.

“Through this program, we aim strengthen our students for modern dental practices,” he said. “By aligning our training with the real-world needs of both patients and providers, we ensure our students receive the most current and comprehensive clinical experience possible. This commitment allows us to maintain a high standard of oral health care for the people of Saskatchewan.”

Through USASK-DATE, eligible patients receive preventive and restorative dental services delivered by senior dental students under the supervision of licensed dentists. Fully funded services may include examinations, fillings, crowns, root canals, dentures, and a range of other essential treatments offered by the USask Dental Clinic. This initiative will continue through spring 2026.

To ensure broad community reach, the College of Dentistry is collaborating with local partners and social service organizations to connect individuals with the high-quality, inclusive, and accessible oral health care they need.
